The Threads of Resilience, Sacrifice, Perseverance and Quiet Courage…

There has been something quietly stirring within me as I work on my legacy quilt and other creative projects lately and that is a deeper connection to the life of my 3 x great grandmother Mary, and to what it meant for her to live “on strength.”
The phrase itself feels like more than history to me now.
It feels like inheritance.

As I stitch fabric together, I find myself thinking about the structure of Mary’s life and the daily duty, the utter responsibility and constant demand for resilience and courage. I recognise something familiar there. Not simply in circumstance, but in spirit.
Like Mary, I understand what it was to live beneath strict systems that dictated where and how life had to be lived.
I understand what it means to constantly earn your place in environments where there was little room for error.
I understand carrying heavy workloads while maintaining a composed facade because everything depended upon continuing forward regardless of exhaustion.
For so much of my life, I too have lived in ways that required endurance beyond what others could often see.
There is a particular kind of strength that develops when survival becomes intertwined with responsibility. A strength that quietly sacrifices comfort, privacy, softness, and even parts of self in order to keep life moving for everyone else.
And yet, despite the weight of it, I find myself holding immense respect for Mary.
Because I know now what it costs to sustain that level of endurance.
I know the grit required.
I know the determination it takes to continue stepping forward while carrying invisible burdens that the outside world will never see.
As I create this quilt, I realise I am not simply piecing together fabric. I am tracing threads of survival that have travelled across generations of women before me. Threads of resilience, sacrifice, perseverance, and quiet courage.
But perhaps what moves me most deeply is this:
I am not only carrying this legacy forward , I am also transforming it.
Through art, through storytelling, through reflection, and through gentleness, I am trying to honour these women while also creating new ways of living beyond mere survival.
Ways that allow truth, tenderness, beauty, and rest to exist alongside strength.
