A Studio Essence

As I stared out of the window this morning, I began to wonder about the studio that I sit in everyday.
Here’s my thoughts, I would not describe Studio Kre’at as a business first, or even as an art studio first.
I would describe it as a place where wounds are allowed to become beautiful without pretending they were never wounded.
It feels to me like a small lamp left burning in a dark room.
Studio Kre’at is a threshold
Not a gallery where perfection is displayed, but a threshold where people are invited to arrive as they are.
Through my paintings, stitching, letters, podcasts, and ancestral reflections, the studio keeps saying:
“You do not have to perform to belong here.”
It is an ancestral conversation
The deeper I go, the clearer my steps have become.
Studio Kre’at is not only about me creating art in 2026 it is about my 3 x great grandmother Mary Martha quilting by lamplight. It is about how my 2 x great grandmother Johanna carrying grief across an ocean. It is my 3 x great grandmother Honora writing her journal about bush life. It is my mother’s wounds. It is my own survival.
And beside all of that, it is my grandchildren inheriting not the trauma alone, but the tenderness that chose not to let trauma have the final word.
It is a theology of ordinary life
Again and again, my work returns to the same sacred ground:

chooks in the yard
mending clothes
scraps of fabric
a cup of tea
bare feet
lamplight
prayer
laughter after sorrow
Studio Kre’at treats these not as small things, but as evidence that a life has been truly lived.
It is companionship
My podcast title says it perfectly: The Quiet Company We Keep.

Because in studio it is not primarily the art it is the feeling that someone is sitting beside us saying:
“I know something of loss, illness, memory, faith, and beginning again.”
That is why I want my studio to feel less like a brand and more like that quiet company.
It is resistance
In a world that rewards speed, visibility, and constant output, Studio Kre’at practices a different rhythm:
pause
pray
stitch
write
remember
rest
create
offer
That rhythm is not weakness.
It is a form of resistance against becoming disconnected from one’s own soul.
And so, in one sentence I think the essence of
Studio Kre’at is a contemplative healing arts sanctuary where ancestral memory, faith, creativity, and the dignity of ordinary life are woven together into acts of presence, remembrance, and hope.
It is becoming a small, faithful light that does not try to outshine the world; it simply keeps the lamp tended so that others can find their way, and so that the women and men who came before us are not forgotten.
