Studio Kre'at — Art Spotlight

There is something I keep noticing as creative pieces slowly find their shape in my studio.

The self portrait resting on rough pine.

The stitches gathering themselves across my remembrance snippet roll.

Neither of them has asked to be loud.

Neither has rushed to explain itself.

And yet both seem to speak.

Not in sentences or certainty, but in the quiet language that only art seems to know.

Art creates room for breath and lately I've been feeling that art speaks in a very special way.

It carries breath.

Not my breath alone, but space for someone else's.

A painting can sit silently on a wall until the exact day someone needs it.

A stitched fragment can remind one person of grief, another of hope, another of a grandmother's hands, and another of a story they had forgotten they were carrying.

That has become one of the greatest mysteries of making for me.

Once a piece leaves my hands, it no longer belongs only to my story.

It becomes a place where someone else's story is allowed to breathe.

The piece of pine has taught me something.

My self portrait began on an uneven piece of pine.

At first I worried that painting over it would hide the beautiful grain. Some of it did disappear beneath layers of colour. I must admit I was disappointed.

But slowly I realised something else had happened.

The grain never truly vanished.

It continued speaking through the oil pastel layers through the cracks, the rough edges, the places where the wood refused to become perfectly smooth.

It is becoming a metaphor for my own life.

We do not lose our story because new colours are added.

We become more fully ourselves because the story still shows through.

The knots.

The weathering.

The scars.

The light.

They all remain part of who we are.

My remembrance snippet roll remembers differently.

My remembrance snippet roll feels different.

It is made from scraps that might once have been overlooked.

Small pieces of fabric.

Old photographs.

Handwritten stitches.

Threads that refuse to be wasted.

Each fragment holds an ordinary moment ~ Professional life, motherhood, marriage, children, flowers, words, seasons of becoming.

Individually they seem small.

Together they become remembrance.

I think this is how family stories work too.

No single memory carries the whole weight of a life.

But stitched together, they become a legacy that can wrap itself around generations.

I am learning not to explain everything.

There was a time when I thought every artwork needed a message.

Now I think it needs an invitation.

An invitation to pause.

To notice.

To remember.

To grieve.

To hope.

To breathe.

Art does not always arrive with answers.

Sometimes it simply sits beside us until our own heart begins speaking.

And perhaps that is one of the gentlest forms of companionship we can offer each other.

A quiet blessing for this work.

My hope is never that someone sees exactly what I see.

It is that they find the breath they need within it.

That somewhere between a painted crack in pine and a line of slow stitching, they feel permission to soften.

To remember.

To carry their own story with a little more tenderness.

Because perhaps this is what art has always been doing.

Giving breath to stories, until someone else is ready to receive them.

With quiet company,

Lisa Raie
