What The Hands Remember

This week, on the podcast my thoughts have been resting on something beautifully ordinary.

Hands.

Not simply what they do, but what they remember.

As I continue stitching pieces together for my legacy quilt, I find myself slowing down enough to notice the countless hands that came before mine. Hands that mended clothing rather than replacing it. Hands that stitched blankets to keep families warm. Hands that prepared meals, tended children, worked long hours, and quietly carried the responsibilities of everyday life.

There was a simplicity to much of that living.

Not because life was easy, but because care was woven into the fabric of daily existence.

A torn sleeve was repaired.

A worn blanket was strengthened.

Fabric was repurposed.

Nothing was discarded if it still had life left within it.

The more I stitch, the more I wonder whether those acts of mending were teaching something much deeper than practical skill.

Perhaps they were teaching patience.

Perhaps they were teaching stewardship.

Perhaps they were teaching us that broken things are not always meant to be thrown away.

As I look at the women whose stories I have been uncovering through genealogy, I often find myself wondering about their hands.

What did they hold?

What did they create?

What did they repair?

What comfort did they offer?

What burdens did they quietly carry?

And while I may never know every detail of their lives, I recognise something of their spirit in the simple act of making.

Thread passing through fabric.

One stitch at a time.

One small act of care joining another.

Perhaps that is how legacies are built.

Not through grand achievements, but through thousands of ordinary acts of love repeated over generations.

This week’s episode of The Quiet Company We Keep is an invitation to reflect on the wisdom carried through hands.

The hands that came before us.

The hands we have today.

And the stories we are passing forward through the work they continue to do.

So as you move through the week ahead, I invite you to look at your own hands with gentleness.

What do they remember?

What have they built?

What have they mended?

What have they held together?

And what quiet acts of care are you passing forward to those who will come after you?

🫖 🧵 🪡 🫖 🧵 🪡🫖

However you arrive,

there is a place for you here.

You may listen…

You may read…

You may see…

And in your own way, find the quiet company you’ve been needing.
