Daily Breaths At The Studio

I’ve just come back inside from being outside.

I was standing beneath the fig tree, wandering the unkept pathways of our cottage garden,

looking up at branches bending in the breeze.

Flowers still blooming.

Fruit still forming.

There is something deeply reassuring about that.

More than anything, it was the simplicity of stillness and silence that met me there.

Not the absence of sound ~ the wind moved through the trees and brushed against the clothesline,

birds called to one another in soft conversation ~ but a different kind of quiet.

The kind that gentles the nervous system.

The kind that rinses away the sharpness of the wider world.

The kind that reminds you that life continues to unfold in small, faithful ways.

And so I have come back inside.

I am sitting at my table now,

about to begin the work of my hands painting, perhaps, or crochet thread moving slowly through fingers or will it be fabric layered and stitched together.

It feels less like beginning and more like continuing

what the garden already started.

And so I will carry the stillness of the garden into the work of my hands today knowing creation is born from quiet and quiet always knows where to land.
